one of my co-workers, who i love, is indian born and has a hindu (i think) tradition of fasting once a year in prayer for her husband's prosperity and well-being. today was her day to fast and all day long i could hear her calling from inside her office, "I'm so hungrrrry."

sadly, this day fell on a working day and from my binge eating of skittles and almonds, I can tell you how hard it is not to OVEReat on a weekday, even HARDER not to eat at all. the poor thing... but it's a sweet thing to do!! despite it being totally male-biased, i doubt there is a day in the life of her husband where he goes with no food for her well-being but hey, giving isn't always bad.

the fast begins at sunrise and ends at moonrise. according to the tradition, the wife must see the moon before she ingests anything but water.
she lives in santa monica, where there is usually a thick cloud cover at night. she said that one year they had to drive as far east as pomona before they saw it.

that year he suggested they abandon the tradition but, after four years of marriage, at age 30, she insists.

I hope she does it forever.
