It is my opinion that people who make a huge point of chewing with their mouths closed are just as annoying as people who chew with their mouths open.

I still don't find people who talk with their mouths full very charming either but I do see this device used in movies quite a bit to endear female characters who are "quirky." I think it is supposed to suggest their lack of vanity and maybe also to signify that this girl is "the one" for the male protagonist.
