There is custom in the building that when you see someone riding the elevator with an a$$load of stuff that you ask, "moving in or moving out?" Not that you'll befriend them if they're moving in and not that you'll miss them if they're moving out. You probably won't ever acknowledge them again but I think we're just trying to keep a mental record of all tenants. I know this of course because we were asked the same question several times when we were moving in.

"Moving in," we'd smugly said.

A few months later, for Memorial Day weekend, we booked three nights at a campsite up the coast in Morro Bay. We spent several days preparing the menu and writing detailed lists of everything we'd need: ice, mustard, garlic press, lantern socks, ax, popcorn popper, folding chairs and so on. On the Friday we were scheduled to leave we were still trying to figure out which board games to bring, how many fire extinguishers we'd need, whether we'd let the dog sleep in the tent, etc.

All of these last minute (but crucial) details delayed us so that we were two hours behind schedule when we finally started loading the car. As we were bringing the second elevator-load to the lobby, a friendly kind of guy in mid-top cross trainers asked, "moving in or moving out?"

"Just camping," we sheepishly answered.
